Punjab

The word Punjab means the land of  five rivers

1) Satluj
2) Beas
3) Ravi
4) Chenab
5) Jhelum

When India became free nation , some parts of Punjab went to Pakistan.The present Punjab state has only - Satluj , Ravi and Beas flowing through it.

Punjab has a long border with Pakistan in the west . Jammu and Kashmir  , Himachal Pradesh , Haryana and Rajasthan are its neighbouring states.

Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab. It is a Union Territory.

Punjab is famous for many of its industries. Ludhiana is very famous for hosiery goods , Jalandar for sports goods, Dhariwal for woollen textilies . Amritsar for shawls and printing  machinery. At Kapurthala railway coaches and  wagons are made . Bicycles , cotton textiled , engineering goods are other industries of Punjab.

The Golden temple of Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib are famous places of pilgrimage of the Sikhs. The famous Jallianwala Bagh memorial is also situated in Amritsar .In 1919 ,on the day of Baisakhi , The British rulers killed hundreds of innocent peoples there.

Land Surface and Rivers of Punjab

The land surface of Punjab is the fertile plain. Punjab is the one of the most fertile states of India. The Satluj , Ravi and Beas  are the rivers flowing through the Punjab.

Climate of Punjab

The Climate of Punjab like Haryana is also extereme . It is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. It gets rain during  summer.

Crops Of Punjab

Since the soil and climate of Haryana and Punjab are alike, the crops are also similar. Wheat is the main crop of Punjab. Rice , Gram ,  bajra , maize , sugar-cane , cotton and oil-seeds are the other major crops. Plenty of vegetables are also grown here. In winters maize chapatis are also relished.

People Of Punjab

The people of Punjab are h2 and sturdy. The are hardworking and  always eager to learn . By changing over to new methods of farming , like using better manure ,better seeds and tractors the famers are producing more and more crops .This is called " Greeen Revolution". By hardwork they made their land richest state of India. The people of Punjab are very heartly people. They speak the Punjabi language.

Festivals Of Punjab

Lohri , Basant Panchami and Baisakhi are the main seasonal festivals of Punjab. People celebrate them with joy.They sing and dance during these festivals. The Bhangra dance performed by the men and Gidda performed by the women of Punjab are very exciting dances.

Dresses Of Punjab

The people of Punjab wear colorful dresses. The women wear salwar - kameez with dupatta. The men wear shirt with short dhoti called tehmat. Somtime they also wear pyjama - kurta.
