From Gujarat if we go southwards we reach maharashtra.it is the third largest state of India .it lies on the west coast along the Arabian sea .gujarat,Madhya Pradesh,Andhra Pradesh ,Karnataka and goa are its neighbours.

Bombay is the capital of maharashtra .it is the second largest city and the biggest seaport of India .bombay is the best natural harbour of the west coast.a harbour is a place near the coast that is deep enough for ships to anchor safely.bombay is the most important industrial city of India. It is very famous for cotton textiles .you all know that Bombay is also the largest film-making centre in the country .the gateway of India is a famous landmark in Bombay .there are many important towns in maharashtra.pune is a beautiful city surrounded by hills.it is an important industrial town too.

Mahabaleshwar is the most popular hill –station of maharashtra.the ajanta and ellora caves near aurangabad, and elephanta caves near Bombay,are famous all over the world for their ancient rock paintings and sculptures.

The chief minerals of maharashtra are iron and manganese .mineral oil is being taken out from the sea at Bombay high ,off the coast of Bombay .besides textiles ,maharashtra has a number of industries like sugar ,automobiles,chemicals,machine tools ,fertilizers,etc.

Land Surface and Rivers of Maharashtra

Maharashtra has many rivers. The godavari,Krishna,bhimaand the wardha flow eastwards,towards the bay of Bengal.a bay is a large ,triangular body of water that has land on three sides .river tapi flows westwards into the Arabian sea.these river make the soil fertile.

Maharashtra has a variety of land surfaces. In the west along the sea there is a narrow coastal plain ,called the konkan coast.it is avery fertile region.

Climate of Maharashtra

It gets heavy rainfall during the monsoon.here it is neither very hot nor very cold.close to this plain is a chain of hills known as the western ghats.the ghats are covered with denseforests of teak and palm trees. Many small rivers rise in these hills.the land in the valleys of these hills is very fertile. To the east of the western ghats lies the deccan plateau.the climate here is hot during the summer and cold during the winter .it gets little rain.

Crops Of Harayana Maharashtra

As we travel through this state,we find that ,the black cotton soil,found in Gujarat,also extends into maharashtra.plenty of cotton is grown here .it is the maincrop.sugar-cane is also grown in large quantities.rice ,wheat,groundnut and tobacco are the other important crops grown here.maharashtra is the home of the famous alphonso mango.it is regarded as the king of mangoes.large quantities of these mangoes are exported to other countries. Oranges of nagpur and grapes of nashik are also well known.fishing is also an important occupation.

Since both rice and wheat are grown here ,you’ll find that the people of maharashtra eat rice and wheat.curd forms an important part of their food

People Of Maharashtra

The people of this state are called maharashtrians.the language they speak is called marathi .they wear simple clothes.the men wear dhoti,kurta with capor turban .the women wear very long sarees tied in a very different style.

Their main festival is ganesh chaturthi.images of lord ganesha are taken out in a procession and immersed in water.
