Kerala

Kerala is the southernmost state on the west coast of india .it is one of the smallest states .tamil nadu and Karnataka are its neighbours .to its west lies the lakshadweep sea.the coast of kerala is called the Malabar coast.

Kerala stretches from the western ghats in the east ,to the lakshadweep sea in the west .the land surface of kerala consists of fertile plains along the coast and the hilly regions of the ghats.the hilly regions are covered with thick evergreen forests of teak and rosewood .

It is a beautiful state ,full of greenery .a number of short river flow westwards,from the ghats in to the lakshadweep sea .find out their names from the map .

Kerala has a long sea coast .along the coast there are a number of lakes .actually ,they are the backwaters of the sea. They are known as lagoons .the water of the lagoons is salty .plenty of fish is found in them .these backwaters are connected with one another by means of canals. Boats ply in these waterways .they carry people and goods from one part to another .

The major industries of kerala are rubber ,electronics ,drugs ,fertilizers and fishing .making of beautiful decorative wooden articles is the other important cottage industry of kerala.

The onam festival is celebrated with great joy in kerala.one of the main attractions of the festivals are boatraces held on the lagoons .thousands of people watch these races.

Climate of Kerala

The climate of this state is hot and wet.it rains almost all the year round .the monsoon in kerala lasts longer and is also very heavy .

Tourism in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of kerala .it is situated on a hill near the sea-shore. It is a beautiful city .kovalam beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.other important towns and cities are thrissur, kottayam,ernakulam,calicut and cochin. Cochin is one of the important seaport of India.it is located at the mouth of a lagoon.it has a big shipyard where ships are made .

As we travel through the forests of kerala,we will find that they are very rich in wildlife .the periyar sanctuary is one of the beautiful wildlife sanctuaries of the country .you can go there and see the animals roaming freely in their natural surroundings.

Crops Of Kerala

Kerala is very rich in spices like ,cardamom ,papper, etc.coffee and rubber are also grown here.

Though plenty of cashewnuts are found in goa and Karnataka as well,the cashewnut of kerala is most famous.huge quantities of this delicious nut is sent to other countries.kerala is also known as the ‘’land of coconuts”.fresh and dry coconut are sent to all parts of the country.oil is extracted from coconut for cooking and making shampoos and soaps .every part of the coconut is useful .the coconut fibre is called coir.carpets,mats,baskets ,etc. are made from it. Coir is the most important cottage industry of kerala .huge banana groves can be seen all over .jackfruit and mango are also grown in plenty in kerala.

Rice is the chief crop of the Malabar coast .the people of kerala eat rice with plenty of fish .like the people of all the coastal states ,they also put plenty of coconut in their food.

People Of Kerala

The people of kerala are known as malayalees. They speak the Malayalam language. The malayalees are very simple people .they generally wear white cloths .the men wear white shirts and small dhoti called mundu unlike the women of other states of south India ,the women of kerala wear white sarees. They also love to put plenty of flowers in their hair.

The people of kerala are very fond of singing and dancing .their kathakali dances is very popular all over the country .kerala has the maxium number of educated people in India.
